2018 CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATION SUSTAINABILITY INDEX

The seventh edition of the Civil Society Organization (CSO) Sustainability Index for the Middle East and North Africa, covering developments in 2018 reports on the strength and overall viability of the CSO sectors in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Yemen, and Libya. The Index addresses advances and setbacks in seven key components of the sustainability of civil society sectors: legal environment, organizational capacity, financial viability, advocacy, service provision, infrastructure, and public image.

The overall sustainability of Lebanon’s civil society sector remained stable in 2018, though CSOs faced growing legal hurdles and harassment. Despite such challenges and the slow pace of reform, CSOs increasingly influenced the public debate in 2018, and successfully mobilized more voices around their various causes. CSOs’ increasing prominence in the public eye and their influence on public discourse also improved their public image.
